USA - China 2020 between HongKong security law, American elections, and the Floyd Case. Interview with Mrs. Ardyth Cooper, spokesperson of Vancouver’s natives
Can a Country apply its security laws by acting independently? Can it intervene in other Countries’ laws? How far? And to what extent the freedom of choice of a Country can be considered legitimate? What is the limit within which there is still respect for the human rights? What if the Law allows racist behaviours? Is it still licit?
In this period when all the world is tormented by many fears, doubts and new risks due to Coronavirus and Covid-19, the political choices of every Country, often confusing too, largely influence other Countries safety and above all the respect for every single citizen, in spite of the skin colour. And that’s when many interferences appear creating very dangerous short circuit for the world peace.
We are getting close to the US Elections on 3rd November 2020 and we are observing a deep divided America, highly different from the pre-Covid-19 one. Moreover, Floyd case is still open and it still burns in everyone’s memories. The images of that 46 years old Afro-American with the neck oppressed by a cop’s knee, knocked down, unarmed, suspected of paying with a 20 $ counterfeit banknote, desperately asking for help in vain, has caused lot of resentment and so many protests, even violent.
Abuse of power, racism, injustice, suffering and death. Themes that unfortunately come back in vogue too often in USA, a Country that has always been considered a model of freedom but that is controversial too due to the right to keep and bear arms and, above all, for the many violence episodes, most of them against black citizens.
All of this, within Donald Trump administration, make the chance for a second mandate for the actual president reduce.
A mix of events between Coronavirus, next US Elections, Floyd case and racism waiting to be analysed.
For that reason we asked Mrs. Ardyth Cooper, a native committed for a long time in her community to improve indigenous’ living conditions, an opinion on Floyd case, about her point of view considering the last global change due to Coronavirus, Covid-19 and Trump administration, also regarding China.
Starting from Minneapolis case, we deeply explored how an American native lives this historical period, in a Country that sometimes falls in episodes like the Floyd one or that, facing the pandemic that all the world is fighting, underestimate the risk and find itself in serious danger.
Mrs. Cooper, in fact, admits to intuit the actual scenario as a chance to be heard and to really obtain the equality of rights, the social equality and, above all, the protection of everyone’s health and rights. According to Mrs. Cooper, this moment could be, especially for Afro-Americans, a “fuse for the change”, a real change. Even the white population has realised how deep is the lack of respect for the black people and for this reason everyone, both black and white citizens, joined the protest together.
Concerning Covid-19, China and the accusations that some American politicians directed against the Country ruled by Xi Jinping, Mrs. Cooper states that, in fact, avoiding gatherings may help to contain the virus and that was not actualised since the beginning because the pandemic was not considered a real emergency in time. The protests may compromise the health but they also want to free the Country, in a moment when Covid is not annihilated yet.
Therefore, a Country can grant firearms license to everyone and also give more power to the police only in case of respect for the rights of every human being and for other Countries laws, such as China’s ones. Some American politicians consider the restrictive measures opted by the Chinese government as a violation of the human rights.
Isn’t Floyd case, not an isolated example, an undeniable lack of respect too? Of an Afro-America, so of a human being.
