Distress flares become officially classified as Time Expired Pyrotechnics, or TEPs, when they come to the end of their life. These TEPs can become unstable and potentially dangerous due to the explosive material that they contain and need to be disposed of by experts authorised to carry out the work.
The Gosport and Fareham Inshore Rescue Service (GAFIRS) had approximately 30 TEPs in need of disposal, consisting of parachute rockets and buoyant life smoke flares. GAFIRS were aware of the disposal services provided by a locally based global provider of bomb disposal services, Ramora UK and approached them for assistance.
Ramora UK takes their social responsibilities seriously by way of helping the local community, and was quick to offer its services free of charge for the local emergency lifeboat service provider.
The flares were inspected and disposed of by Ramora UK's experts on the GAFIRS site, Gosport on Wednesday 29th May, 2013 with no disruption to the emergency operations.
"Ramora UK provided a highly professional service. Their staff were very thorough and knowledgeable. We are delighted that Ramora could assist." said Mr. Drummond, GAFIRS' Health and Safety Advisor.
Ramora UK's Managing Director,
David Welch MIExpE, MIABTI, FCIM added:
"We take pride in our local community and are more than pleased to help wherever we can. TEPs can be extremely hazardous and need to be correctly dealt with by experts."
