Leena Nio's Paintings Offer Different Propositions of Reality

Leena Nio made her artistic debut in 2008 and graduated from the Finnish Academy of Fine Arts in 2010. Since, Nio's works have been studies of spatiality. The theoretical starting point of her work is to create two separate spaces with three different dimensional depths. The third space between the viewer and the painting is achieved once the painting appears to continue outside the work itself. The viewer's movement becomes a part of the work, as the paintings' structure and materiality change in different distances. A closer view emphasizes the physicality of the paint: a thick coat of paint and the grooves left by the brush achieve an abstract and ornamental impression, while the further distance helps to focus on the subject.

Nio relies on her intuition and spontaniety although her painting style requires a precise and systematical approach. Traditional themes such as portraits, landscapes and still lifes are repeated. With the ability to create feelings of alienation and indentification Nio brings the visual power of her paintings firmly to the present. The subjects reveal and hide at the same time: spaces might be empty and full, mixing the imaginative scenes of the jungle with empty suburbian interiors. In her recent paintings Nio is driven by her 5-year-old son's imagination and games with rope and string traps.

The fascination of Nio's paintings relies on the fact that everything you see in the painting is true. The mystery is which part is tangible and which a figment of the imagination: overlapping scenes in the painting offer several realities.
