Overtourism in Costiera Amalfitana: Local Authorities Take Action

In Costiera Amalfitana and the Sorrento Peninsula, the issue of overtourism is becoming increasingly pressing. Local mayors are taking measures to manage the influx of tourists and protect resident communities. In Meta, Mayor Giuseppe Tito has launched a battle against non-hotel accommodations, limiting the share of homes available for short-term rentals to 10%.

The Italian public largely supports limiting access to the most tourist-heavy areas, but implementing such measures is not straightforward. While popular destinations are deploying anti-crowding strategies to manage visitor flow and minimize disruptions, Tourism Minister Daniela Santanché emphasizes the need for organized management rather than complaints about overtourism. Despite these efforts, the coexistence between residents and visitors remains challenging, with tensions flaring up during the heated summer season.

From north to south, various municipalities, both coastal and mountainous, are experimenting with diverse strategies to mitigate the impact of overtourism during the peak Ferragosto holiday week. The World Tourism Organization defines overtourism as the excessive negative impact of tourism on a destination, affecting the perceived quality of life of residents and the quality of visitor experiences.

During the Ferragosto week, the peak of the Italian holiday season, overtourism becomes an inevitable challenge. Millions of visitors flock to the same popular spots, leading to fully booked hotels, B&Bs, and restaurants, along with higher prices. Long waits at museums, ferries, and even beaches are common. In the mountains, particularly on the Dolomite passes, traffic regulation and digitalization of parking areas are in place, but some passes resemble highways more than serene mountain paths.

The phenomenon of overtourism in Italy, especially during peak holiday periods, requires innovative and organized management strategies to balance the needs of residents and tourists. As local authorities continue to experiment with solutions, the goal remains to ensure a harmonious coexistence and preserve the quality of life and experiences for all.
