WDC Helsinki 2012 is more than just a series of events or projects. It is about improving our cities, embedding design in life. The WDC Helsinki 2012 vision extends the concept of design from goods to services and systems.

A year of events, beginnings and experiences

WDC Helsinki 2012 starts its year with New Year's Eve of Design on the 31^st of December 2011. Everyone is invited to Helsinki to celebrate the WDC year 2012. Other events include WDC Design Gala, Helsinki Design Week and 90 exhibitions covering a wide range of design and also questioning the boundaries between art and design. One of the main exhibitions is Everyday Discoveries which conveys a broad view of contemporary design and compares current design standings between countries.

One of the WDC Helsinki 2012 goals is to demonstrate the benefits of design in solving challenges of urban life. New design intensive processes are started in the fields of health and wellbeing, services, urban planning, built environment, green environment, open source information, data visualization and design education.

Just like design itself, WDC Helsinki is everywhere around you. It can be found at galleries, shops or cafes at Helsinki Design District. The WDC Helsinki 2012 program will also demonstrate how design is embedded in sauna, silence and nature.

The World Design Capital is an initiative of ICSID, the International Council of Societies of Industrial Design, which every second year recognizes one global city for its accomplishments in utilizing design as a tool to improve social, cultural, and economic life.
