Mendelssohn, Strauss, Bach: Leipzig Music Highlights 2014

To mark the 150th anniversary of the birth of Richard StraussLeipzig Opera and the Leipzig Gewandhaus will present a Strauss cycle from April through July 2014. On 14 June, "Die Frau ohne Schatten" will premiere with a world-class cast at Leipzig Opera House. Furthermore "Elektra" and "Der Rosenkavalier" will be resumed. The Vienna Philharmonic under conductor Christoph Eschenbach will be performing a Strauss programme in the Gewandhaus with Lang Lang on 24 May while the actual birthday concert on 11 June is reserved to Riccardo Chailly and the Gewandhaus Orchestra. http://www.oper-leipzig.de, http://www.gewandhaus.de

The 300th anniversary of the birth of Carl Philipp Emmanuel Bach, Johann Sebastian Bach's second oldest son, will be celebrated with numerous events and a special exhibition in Leipzig. Under the banner "The True Art" next year's edition of Bachfest Leipzig will commemorate the life and work of C. P. E. Bach from 13-22 June 2014. http://www.bach-leipzig.de
