Composed of an alloy of copper and applications of gold, the piece displays the letter Y surrounded by the inscription - eteroae. leal (loyal). Amor (Love).

The figuration of the letter Y is known since at least the late twelfth century and emerged as an interpretation of an ancient emblem representing the dilemma of man facing the choice between good and evil.

The so called Littera Pythagorae was assumed as a symbol of Jesus, referring to the first letter of his name, Yesus. In the 15th century, the Y was also associated with royalty.

Subjected to laboratory tests to validate the authenticity, surprising results demonstrate that this very rare medallion was once covered with gold.

With an estimate of 50.000€ to 80.000€ (USD $62.000 to $100.000), lot 248 promises to be one of the highlights of the Antiques and Works of Art auction to be held at VERITAS Art Auctioneers, in Portugal, next week.
